HISTORY & 15-COUNTY REGION

The Innovation Crescent™ region was formed in 2007 by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development as part of its Work Ready Initiative under Gov. Sonny Perdue to promote life science assets in the State. Outlined as a contiguous life science cluster in the shape of a crescent between Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport and the University of Georgia in Athens-Clarke County, the Innovation Crescent Regional Partnership launched its branding initiative in 2008 at the BIO International tradeshow in San Diego. As a result of the technology industry explosion in the region, particularly in health IT, the Innovation Crescent added the technology industry as one of its target sectors in 2013. Innovation Crescent member counties remain situated in a contiguous crescent shape and contain major life science and technology cluster assets for the State of Georgia.
